Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Science remain some of the most competitive university courses in the UK. During this session host Imogen Mordak, Pastoral Lead – Progression at Cirencester College, will explore how colleges can develop a structured support programme that helps students navigate admissions tests, work experience requirements, university applications and interviews. Drawing on practical experience at Cirencester College, at the end of this session you should have a framework, resources and strategies that can be implemented within you own institutions to improve progression outcomes and widen participation.

Carol Petropoulos, Head of Student Experience, Wellbeing at Calderdale College and Steph Robinson from West Yorkshire Police will host this session to explain all about their NAMSS Student Services Award winning project – Cuppa with a Copper. This project was the result of an inspirational collaboration between Calderdale College Student Services and West Yorkshire Police that has had a profound impact on rebuilding trust between young people and the police in Calderdale.

Generation Alpha is beginning to enter further education. This is a generation whose formative experiences have been shaped by smartphones, algorithms, artificial intelligence, digital immersion, disrupted schooling and increasingly personalised online environments.

While the language of “digital natives” is familiar, it can obscure important differences in digital confidence, communication, attention, emotional regulation, independence and access. Colleges therefore need to consider not only how Generation Alpha uses technology, but how their wider experiences may influence inclusion, participation, wellbeing and relationships with education.

This workshop will explore Generation Alpha through the lens of inclusive practice. Delegates will consider how digital immersion and the attention economy may be influencing cognition, motivation, communication, help-seeking, expectations of learning and attitudes towards artificial intelligence.
