Join this inspirational workshop to hear how a group of students have developed a new framework for colleges to make the bursary system more consistent, accessible and easy to navigate for young people and their families.
Work with them, share your ideas and learn about a funded project that has already made an impact with college leaders in the South of England.

A Prince’s Trust study recently showed half (49 per cent) of 16–25-year-olds in the UK think the cost of living crisis has had a worse impact on their life than the pandemic, and another survey found 4 in 5 students feel anxious about money.
In this workshop we’ll share findings from our recent survey measuring students’ confidence in different areas of their financial literacy. You’ll hear what topics students are least knowledgeable about and we’ll discuss specific steps you can use to introduce financial education that has an impact.
Stephen Mix, Trustee & Chair of the Hyfa Foundation, will host this session at 1.45pm

Lisa Humphries and colleagues will detail the approach Chichester College Group takes to Student Finance and will particularly focus on how they have managed this through three mergers over the last 5 years. They will reflect on what has worked well, what the challenges have been and their priorities moving forward.
This session will run at 1.45pm.

The Project S Simplification Pilot at Middlesbrough College is an initiative aimed at streamlining the processes and policies related to student financial support, specifically the 16-19 Bursary Fund and Free College Meals. The pilot involves collaboration with the Department for Education to provide more flexibility and clarity in the guidance and audit practices, allowing colleges to better meet the needs of their learners.
The pilot includes various measures such as simplifying the funding rules, improving enrolment processes and enhancing the support provided to students. It aims to reduce administrative burdens and ensure that financial support is effectively targeted to those who need it most.
This workshop will share reflections on Project S and give delegates an understanding of its benefits and drawbacks.

As forced migration experts in the education sector and education experts in the forced migration sector, REUK works to directly support young refugees and asylum seekers to access and thrive in education. We simultaneously work with education institutions (schools, colleges and universities) to help staff to grow in confidence in this area, as well as working on research and advocacy.
This workshop will provide an overview of the challenges faced by refugee and asylum seeking learners in Further Education and provide examples of good practice. There will be a chance to hear from and learn from each other about the frustrations and successes in supporting refugee and asylum seeking learners.
We will touch on the differences between common immigration statuses and discuss the corresponding rights and entitlements. We will signpost to other helpful resources that will equip you to more confidently work with refugee and asylum seeking learners.
This session will help you to think of new ideas to create a culture of welcome, and to identify practical interventions that promote success for these students.
